Arrange maternity care at home (kraamzorg)
For the first days after the birth a maternity nurse (kraamverzorgende) comes to your home to look after you and the baby, check on you both, and help with feeding. This is normal in the Netherlands. Checked against zorginstituutnederland.nl on 22 September 2026.

What else to know
Register early: many organisations accept registrations from week 12 and the popular ones fill up. Check that the organisation has a contract with your insurer. Basic insurance covers it apart from a contribution of €5.70 an hour (2026), and that contribution does not come out of your own risk excess (eigen risico). You get between 24 and 80 hours, depending on what you and the baby need. Your midwife or insurer can give you names.
