Having a baby in the Netherlands: the deadlines that matter
Having a baby in the Netherlands sets off 7 deadlines that carry a real consequence for missing them, and three of those catch people out. The birth must be registered within 3 working days, the baby must go on your health insurance within 4 months, and if you are not married the partner must acknowledge the baby (erkenning) before the birth to be its legal parent. Checked 21 September 2026.
Arrange maternity care at home (kraamzorg)
Early in the pregnancy. The official advice is the start; city practices commonly say by week 10. Being late costs you the choice, not the care: the good ones fill up.

Acknowledge the baby before the birth (erkenning)
Before the birth, if you are not married or in a registered partnership. Without it the mother's partner is not automatically the baby's legal parent. Doing it before the birth means the baby has two legal parents from the moment they are born.

Tell your employer when your maternity leave starts
At least 3 weeks before the leave starts, so at the latest 7 weeks before your due date. You pick the start date inside the window, but the notice period is fixed.

Register the birth at the municipality (geboorteaangifte)
Within 3 working days of the birth, at the municipality where the baby was born. Registering late is reported and can mean a fine. The day of the birth does not count, and you always get at least 2 working days.

Add the baby to your health insurance
Within 4 months of the birth. Register inside it and cover runs from the day they were born. Register later and cover starts only from the day you register, leaving you to pay anything spent before that.

Claim child benefit (kinderbijslag)
Chase it if no letter has arrived 6 weeks after you registered the birth. The municipality tells the SVB and they write to you; if they have not, the claim does not start itself.

Claim childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag)
Within 3 months of the childcare starting. Anything earlier than that is lost. This is the deadline that catches people out.
