Extra scans you pay for yourself (pretecho)
Dutch care gives you three ultrasounds as standard — the dating scan, the 13-week scan and the 20-week scan — which is fewer than many countries offer. Anything beyond them you can book yourself without a referral and pay for, at roughly 40 to 120 euros depending on the scan and the clinic. Checked against deverloskundige.nl on 21 September 2026.

What else to know
The usual ones are an early scan from about 7 weeks, done internally, which shows the heartbeat and whether it is twins; a scan to find out the sex from about 14 weeks; and a 3D or 4D scan, which clinics put at 24 to 30 weeks because that is when the pictures are best. Booked that way they are not medical examinations and basic insurance does not pay for them. The exception is worth knowing: if there is a medical reason for an early scan, your midwife can refer you, and a referred scan is covered — so ask before you assume you have to pay. Some supplementary policies refund part of a scan on request too, so check yours.
