First prenatal consultation (première consultation prénatale)
French pregnancy care runs on 7 compulsory prenatal consultations, and this is the first of them. It has to happen before the end of the third month, and it is the appointment at which the pregnancy is normally declared. Checked against service-public.gouv.fr on 22 September 2026.

What else to know
A GP, a gynaecologist or a midwife (sage-femme) can do it — you choose, and you do not need a referral. From the declaration onward the compulsory prenatal examinations are covered at 100% of the Assurance Maladie tariff. 2 things to know about that 100%: it does not cover a doctor's fees above the official tariff (dépassements d'honoraires), which is what a mutuelle is for; and it does not yet cover everything. Ultrasounds are at 70% until the end of your 5th month, and it is only from the first day of your 6th month that all your medical care moves to 100% with nothing to pay up front (tiers payant), whether or not it relates to the pregnancy — see what you pay for pregnancy care in France.
