Register the birth within 42 days, by appointment
Every birth must be registered at a Births Registry within 42 days, by appointment. It is free inside that window, HK$140 from day 43 to a year, and HK$680 after a year — and after a year the Registrar's consent is needed as well as the fee. Checked against immd.gov.hk on 22 September 2026.

What else to know
If you are married, Immigration says the attendance of either parent is sufficient. If you are not married and the father's name is to go on the entry, there are four routes: you attend together; the mother attends with the father's statutory declaration confirming paternity; the father attends with the mother's statutory declaration; or either of you attends with a certified copy of a court order on paternity. You do not need to bring the baby. A certified copy of the entry — the birth certificate everyone will ask for — costs HK$140. For a foreign baby, Form ID 235B, the permit to remain, is one of the documents the dependant visa application needs.
