Get the baby a passport, then a dependant visa
A baby born here to two parents who are neither Chinese nationals nor permanent residents does not normally have the right of abode; Immigration's rule is that unless a person has the right of abode or right to land, they need a visa or entry permit to take up residence as a dependant. The child gets a permit to remain at birth registration and then needs, in order, a passport from your own country's consulate and an application to the Immigration Department for residence as your dependant. Immigration wants the birth certificate, Form ID 235B, the baby's passport, your marriage certificate and your own passport and visa, and says such an application normally takes 6 weeks from receipt of all the required documents and the fee. Ask your consulate before the birth how long a first passport takes, because that is the slow step, and lodge the dependant application as soon as it arrives.
