Confirm the hospital booking and pay the deposit
Private hospitals want the booking confirmed and a deposit paid months ahead, and the popular obstetricians deliver at only one or two of them. In the public system, having done your antenatal checks with the hospital is what makes you a 'booked' case, which for a non-eligible person is the difference between HK$74,000 and HK$130,000. Book antenatal classes
Antenatal classes come with the service you booked: the Hospital Authority obstetrics departments run them for their own patients since the July 2026 change, private hospitals run their own, and independent groups run classes in English. They fill up, and for expats without family nearby they are the easiest way to meet other parents due the same month. Checked against info.gov.hk on 22 September 2026.

A car seat if you will ever be in a private car
Since 1 November 2025 a child under 8 who is shorter than 1.35 metres must be in a child restraint in a private car, in the front or the back; the fixed penalty is HK$230. Taxis are not private cars and the rule does not apply to them, which is how most car-free expat families get home from the hospital. Checked against info.gov.hk on 21 September 2026.
