Declare the birth at the mairie (déclaration de naissance)
The birth is declared at the mairie of the place the baby was born. Many maternity units have a registrar on site and will do it for you — ask, because it is the easiest version of this. Checked against service-public.gouv.fr on 22 September 2026.

What else to know
The deadline is five days, and the day of the birth itself does not count; if the last day falls on a weekend or a public holiday it runs to the next working day. Bring photo ID, the certificate from the maternity unit, the reconnaissance if there is one, and the livret de famille if you have one.
