Declare the birth to the Assurance Maladie (déclaration de son enfant)
Registering the birth at the mairie does not tell the Assurance Maladie. That is a separate declaration, and it is what puts the baby on your carte Vitale. Checked against ameli.fr on 23 September 2026.

What else to know
Do it quickly: between 5 and 8 days after the declaration at the mairie. Online it is on your compte ameli under Démarches > Modifier vos informations personnelles, and you may be asked to upload supporting documents such as the acte de naissance. Read this next part before you start, because it decides which route you take: the online service cannot be used if either parent is not insured under the French system — ameli's own example is a cross-border worker — and in that case you have to go to your caisse d'assurance maladie directly. For a lot of international families that is the normal case, not the exception, so check which of you is insured where before you try to do it online and find the form will not take you. There is a second reason the online route may be closed to you, and it catches recent arrivals: while you are on a temporary number (NIA) you cannot open a compte ameli at all. Either way the declaration can be made by phone on 36 46 (free service, plus the cost of the call), or at your caisse.
