Get the baby their own passport or ID card
If your baby is Dutch, they cannot travel on a parent's passport: they need their own document, applied for at your municipality with the baby present. Everyone with parental custody has to consent, either by coming along or by signing a consent form with a copy of their ID. Checked against rijksoverheid.nl on 22 September 2026.

What else to know
Allow time before any trip, and check the expiry date when it is issued: a child's document runs for a shorter period than an adult's. If your baby is not Dutch — which is the case for most babies of two foreign parents — the passport comes from your own country's embassy instead, which is a separate step.
