Having a baby in France when neither of you is French
Three things no French guide covers, because they only exist for a family from somewhere else: the social security number everything else hangs off, the baby's passport from your own consulate, and the document that lets a non-EU child leave France and come back. Checked 22 September 2026.
Make sure you have a French social security number (numéro de sécurité sociale)
Everything in this plan that says "covered at 100%" runs through the Assurance Maladie, and that needs a permanent social security number and an account on ameli. fr. Checked against ameli.fr on 22 September 2026.
Applies to people who moved to France from another country. Paperbump schedules this usually between week 7 and week 12 of the pregnancy. What this step involves · ameli.fr
Get the baby a passport from your own country
A baby born in France to two foreign parents is not automatically French. The child needs a passport from your own country's consulate, and some consulates also want the birth registered with them, which is a separate application. No French government page covers another country's passport; your own consulate is the only authority on it. Checked 22 September 2026.

Check what the baby needs to stay legally (titre de séjour, DCEM)
The rules depend on your own nationality. EU, EEA and Swiss families have nothing to do. Checked against service-public.gouv.fr on 22 September 2026.
