What to buy for a baby in Singapore
23 things worth having before the birth, each with what it costs in Singapore new and second-hand. Shopee is the most-used shop in Singapore and Carousell the place second-hand baby gear changes hands; Amazon.sg is where expats find the imported brands. Lazada sells much the same as Shopee. The expat Facebook groups and Kiddy Palace or Mothercare in the malls are the other places people actually buy — none of them link to a search, so they are not here.
The short version
Buy new: cot mattress, bottles and teats, infant car seat, stroller sun shade and mosquito net, diapers and wipes, first month, digital thermometer, socket covers and corner guards, nursing bras, and post-birth supplies. Most of the rest is fine used, and that is where the S$1,798 sits. Each thing below says which, and why.
Sleeping
- Cot — new S$200–S$700, used S$60–S$300
- Second-hand is fine
A solid cot frame outlasts several babies, so a used one costs a fraction of new and loses you nothing; the mattress is the part to buy new. Singapore cots run from about S$200 for a basic frame to S$700 for a mid-range cot bed that converts later. Check the mattress size before buying either, because the American 130 × 70 cm and European 120 × 60 cm sizes both sell here and a sheet for one does not fit the other.

- Cot mattress — new S$80–S$250
- Buy new
Buy new: a used mattress may have sagged, be hiding mould from the humidity, and the safe-sleep advice everywhere is a firm, flat, new one. A firm foam mattress in the right size is about S$80 to S$250. In Singapore's climate a breathable cover matters more than a thick one.

- Bassinet or bedside crib — new S$100–S$400, used S$30–S$120
- Second-hand is fine
For the first three to four months a bassinet next to your bed is easier than a cot, and babies outgrow it fast, so second-hand is plentiful on Carousell. New ones run from S$100 to S$400; bedside cribs that clip to the bed are the top of that range.

- Swaddles and light sleep sacks — new S$60–S$150, used S$20–S$50
- Second-hand is fine
Singapore is warm year round and most homes run the air-conditioning at night, so a light muslin swaddle or a 0.5 tog sleep sack does the job, never a thick one. Two or three cost S$60 to S$150 new, and used ones are cheap because babies outgrow them in months.

- Second-hand is fine
Useful when the nursery is at the other end of a condo; less so in a small flat. Audio monitors from about S$80, video ones S$150 to S$350. Used ones are fine as long as the batteries hold and the app still works.

Feeding
- Bottles and teats — new S$40–S$120
- Buy new
Buy new; teats wear and bottles scratch. A starter set with four bottles is S$40 to S$120. Buy a small set first — babies are fussy about teats, and you may end up switching brands.

A closed-system electric pump can be bought used as long as you replace the tubing, valves and shields, which are cheap; an open-system pump should not. Electric pumps run from S$150 to S$500 new. Hospitals and some shops hire hospital-grade pumps by the month, which is worth it for the first weeks before you know how much you will use one.

An electric steam steriliser is S$60 to S$200 new and used ones are common. Boiling water works too if you would rather not buy one.

- Muslin cloths — new S$30–S$80, used S$10–S$25
- Second-hand is fine
Ten or more; they are burp cloths, sun shades, swaddles and light blankets. A pack of a few is S$30 to S$80 new; bundles of used ones go for almost nothing.

Not needed until around 6 months, so buy it later and buy it used: high chairs are heavy, wipe clean and get sold on constantly. New they run S$100 to S$400.

Getting around
- Infant car seat — new S$200–S$600
- Buy new
Buy new: a seat that has been in a crash can be damaged invisibly, and you cannot tell from a listing. Under the Road Traffic rules a child under 1.35 m must be in a child restraint in a private car or a private-hire car such as Grab; licensed taxis are exempt, which is why many car-free expat families use taxis rather than carry a seat. An infant seat is S$200 to S$600; if you do not own a car, a lighter carrier-style seat you can take in a Grab is the practical choice.

- Stroller — new S$250–S$1,200, used S$80–S$400

Singapore is a stroller city: malls, MRT lifts and covered walkways make a lightweight, one-hand-fold stroller the everyday choice over a big pram. New from about S$250 for a good lightweight one to S$1,000 and beyond for a travel system. Used strollers are the single best-stocked category on Carousell, with two-year-old premium models at a third of the price.

Carriers are how you get through a hawker centre and onto a bus. A soft structured carrier is S$80 to S$350 new and plentiful used; in this climate a mesh or 'cool' version is worth the difference.

Clothes and covers
- First clothes — new S$100–S$250, used S$30–S$80
- Second-hand is fine
Short-sleeved rompers and light cotton, not the knitted sets relatives abroad will send. Newborns grow out of everything in weeks, so used bundles on Carousell are the way to buy the first two sizes. A new starter wardrobe is S$100 to S$250; used, a fraction of that.

- Stroller sun shade and mosquito net — new S$15–S$50

Two things the climate makes non-negotiable: a proper sun shade or parasol for the stroller, and a mosquito net that fits it, because dengue is a year-round risk. Both are cheap new, S$15 to S$50 together, and not worth buying used.

Diapers and care
- Diapers and wipes, first month — new S$80–S$140

Around 300 diapers in the first month. Buy one small pack of newborn size before the birth and stock up after, once you know the baby's weight; the big packs and subscriptions on Shopee and Lazada are markedly cheaper than the supermarket. Budget S$80 to S$140 for the first month including wipes.

A plastic tub, S$30 to S$90 new; used ones are everywhere and a wipe with soap is all they need. A folding one saves space in a flat.

A digital ear or forehead thermometer, S$30 to S$90. Buy new; it is a medical instrument and you want it accurate. Paediatricians here take fever in a small baby seriously, so it earns its place early.

Only for homes with stairs, a balcony door or a kitchen you want closed off — most HDB flats and many condos are on one level. Not needed until the baby moves, around 8 months. S$60 to S$150 new, used for a fraction.
